World Suicide Prevention Day: A Call to Compassion and Action

Every year on September 10th, the world observes World Suicide Prevention Day, a time to raise awareness, remember those we’ve lost, and work together to save lives.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 700,000 people die by suicide each year... that’s one person every 40 seconds. For every suicide, there are many more people who attempt it, and countless others who struggle silently with suicidal thoughts. These numbers remind us that suicide is not just a personal tragedy, but a global public health crisis.

What We Can Do at a Micro Level (Individually & Locally):

  • Check in on loved ones. Even those who seem “happy” may be struggling inside.

  • Listen without judgment. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply being present.

  • Learn the warning signs of suicide, such as withdrawal, hopelessness, or changes in behavior.

  • Encourage help-seeking. Remind others that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

What We Can Do at a Macro Level (Communities & Systems):

  • Advocate for greater access to mental health care and affordable treatment.

  • Support policies that address bullying, substance abuse, and social isolation, which are risk factors for suicide.

  • Invest in education and awareness campaigns to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

  • Support organizations doing life-saving work, such as crisis hotlines and suicide prevention nonprofits.

On this World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s commit to compassion, connection, and change. Every conversation matters, every act of kindness matters, and together, we can help prevent suicide.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t wait, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Support is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
